Today we’re packing up a wholesale order to go out, but the weather is sooo nice out, we keep sneaking outside!  Kristin, AKA my helper, Girl Friday that the knitty pattern was named for, is reskeining while I label.

This is my temporary coaster.  It’s overkill, but this hotpad I crocheted from Rustic Wool was all I had handy.  It does the job, though!

Autumn Cycle  by Moriza

This week brings the official arrival of the autumn season, and while the weather here in Alabama isn’t exactly cool and crisp, my mind is still turning toward the changes of the season.  I have fall color on the brain, and I’m thinking up some new ideas for autumn colorways.

To celebrate the turning of the season, this Friday’s freebie is a giveaway contest for a skein of our Luxe Merino Fine, a luscious cashmere blend, in Trafford, a rich autumnal gold.

Leave a comment below telling about which color combinations make you think of autumn, perhaps something traditional, but maybe something off the beaten path, like your favorite fall outfit, the color of a cozy room, or another memory of the season.

Winner will be picked by random number generator Monday morning and announced here.  Check back to see if you are the lucky winner!

The shop is freshly stocked with Merino Bamboo Worsted, regular price $21.95, now on sale for $15.00 per skein!  Super soft, with an interesting crepe-like texture, this yarn makes wonderful accessories.  And one skein goes a looong way!

Today I’ve got a bit of project inspiration to share, based on some cuffs I made and sold last week at Renegade Craft.  I’ve been making plain, quick crochet cuffs (you can easily substitute a garter or seed stitch band of knitting), then dressing them up with paper-pieced fabric hexagons!  Oh, those addictive hexagons, they keep showing up everywhere around Casa de Kitchen Sink.

The basics of hexagon paper piecing can be found in a great tutorial on the Sew, Mama, Sew blog, as well as here on Lovestitches.  And I use the no-show sewing method shown here on the Sew Many Ways blog.  This is a great way to use up teensy bits of cool scrap fabric, or to show off one motif of a larger print.

Don’t forget to remove the paper before you sew the patch down!  Use a sewing needle and thread and little whipstitches.

I’m finally settled back in from our trip to Renegade Craft fair in Chicago this past weekend, and it was so much fun!  Kristin Rengren, of Retro Knit, the author of Vintage Baby Knits, helped me in the booth on Saturday and my lovely friend Amanda pitched in on Sunday, and it was so much fun to talk to all the Chicago area knitters and crocheters who stopped by.

The weather was sunny and beautiful!  I even came home with a tan!

On the drive up, Chris and I fit in some photography:

And of course some beer!

I snuck away from the booth to do a bit of shopping and came away with some lovely, delicate porcelain earrings from Red Raven Studios.

And a “librarian squid” from Cleo Dee, who stitches up squids for every occasion:

I picked up some sweet block printed tea towels as gifts from Artgoodies:

The shear numbers of amazing, talented artists and crafters at Renegade was mind-blowing!  If you ever get a chance to go to a Renegade event near you, I highly recommend it, although your wallet may be a little sore afterwards.

Our Luxe Merino Fine was as popular as ever, and many, many skeins found happy new homes in the Midwest.  I just listed stock of Luxe in the etsy shop, which is dyed up and ready for immediate shipment.

Teish!

Teish, please e-mail me (mail-at-kitchensinkdyeworks-dot-com) and let me know which colorway you’d like, and your shipping address.

Thank you everyone for all of your great suggestions!  I’ll get to work on some of your technique suggestions and see what clicks.  I have to say, the beads intrigue me…

Renegade was a blast, and I’ll post a roundup tomorrow!  I must say,  I love Chicago.

I love to learn new techniques; I’m a learning junkie (for example, last week’s hex patchwork mania).

This project keeps on growing!

This project keeps on growing!

I love it even MORE when I can share those newfound bits of knowledge with other fiber folk!  So you can guess how fired up I am about the tutorial days in our new Friday series.  I have a few things in mind, but what I’d love to know what knitting/crochet/fiber related tutorials you would like to see here in upcoming posts.

So this week’s freebie is nice and simple: leave a comment telling what type of tutorial you’d love to see here on the Kitchen Sink blog, and you’ll be entered to win a custom-dyed skein of our Blue Faced Lace yarn, great for socks, lace and, I must say, absolutely dreamy for crochet.  I’ll take entries through Monday evening, then randomly draw a winner when I arrive back from Chicago on Tuesday.  The winner can then choose a colorway for their special skein.
