I love to learn new techniques; I’m a learning junkie (for example, last week’s hex patchwork mania).

This project keeps on growing!

This project keeps on growing!

I love it even MORE when I can share those newfound bits of knowledge with other fiber folk!  So you can guess how fired up I am about the tutorial days in our new Friday series.  I have a few things in mind, but what I’d love to know what knitting/crochet/fiber related tutorials you would like to see here in upcoming posts.

So this week’s freebie is nice and simple: leave a comment telling what type of tutorial you’d love to see here on the Kitchen Sink blog, and you’ll be entered to win a custom-dyed skein of our Blue Faced Lace yarn, great for socks, lace and, I must say, absolutely dreamy for crochet.  I’ll take entries through Monday evening, then randomly draw a winner when I arrive back from Chicago on Tuesday.  The winner can then choose a colorway for their special skein.

Birmingham folks, come see us at our House Party this Saturday, July 11th, from 10am to 4pm. We’ll be bringing a ton of new yarn colors as well as spinning fibers.  See out new semi-solids and tonal colors, great for texture and lace knitting.

The party will be held from 10am to 4pm; this is an open house style event, so come any time you like during the event.  Refreshments will be served, so stay and enjoy the party, but if you only have a short time to spare, please pop in for as long as you like!

I’ll be bringing lots of sock yarns, worsted weights, and spinning fibers for you to choose from.  Payment can be made with cash, check, or Visa and Mastercard.

E-mail me at mail (at) kitchensinkdyeworks.com for directions and map link.

I just posted a shop update on etsy today, full of lovely spinning fiber!  There’s a bunch of BFL wool and Merino/bamboo rovings.  Now I wish I had more time to spin some up myself!  But I’ll be content knowing they’ll be shipped off to happy new homes soon.

I have a little secret to share about a project I’ve been cooking up for a little while now. The dyer at Kitchen Sink Dyeworks is…Mercedes Tarasovich-Clark! I’ve been splashing together the colorways and choosing the lovely yarns for this new indie dyer venture.

I’ve been quietly working on Kitchen Sink Dyeworks for a few months. I chose not to tie the new yarn venture to my name right away to get some raw, honest product feedback (which has been overwhelmingly positive, thank you) and to be sure this was a project I wanted to pursue for the long term before going public. I’m happy to say that I love creating these yarns and am now ready to grow this project past the ‘moonlighting’ phase!

As the name implies, this project is a cottage industry, I dye all my yarn and fibers in microbatches to have a lot of control over the color placement and quality of the finished items. The resulting yarns create a beautiful, random color effect, with a mosaic-like pattern that won’t pool or flash in the finished knit or crochet project. I create yarns that as a yarn junkie I love to knit and crochet. I know that when I can’t wait to jump into a new project with a Kitchen Sink yarn, I’m definitely on the right track!

What’s next for Kitchen Sink Dyeworks? We’re taking the show on the road. One of the things I wanted to do with this new venture was to travel more, showing at fiber festivals and indie craft fairs across the country. I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be a vendor at the upcoming Sock Summit, hosted by the Yarn Harlot Stephanie Pearl-McPhee and Tina Newton of Blue Moon Fibers, in Portland, Oregon, in August. I have a lot of sock yarn to dye this summer! I’ll also be at the Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair in Fletcher, North Carolina, in October. And if anyone has any ideas about other venues in the coming year, I’d love to hear about them. Any excuse for a road trip!

Kitchen Sink Dyeworks will be hosting a trunk show and launch party at Knit Nouveau on Tuesday, April 14th to celebrate with local Birmingham fiber folk. See the new yarns and colors, project models, and enter to win some fun Kitchen Sink kits! I’m also working on a charity project that will launch in May that I’m really fired up about, so keep an eye on the website for updates.

Join Kitchen Sink Dyeworks on the web at our website, www.kitchensinkdyeworks.com; on ravelry, user name: kitchensink, fan group: kitchen sink dyeworks fans; and on twitter: kitchensinkdye. I’d love to hear from you!

Sincerely,

Mercedes Tarasovich-Clark

blank-skeins

I love being in the dye kitchen on sunny days, with the door open, turning pale white skeins of yarn and fiber into curtains of color.  As each batch comes out of the steamers, I bring it outside to cool.  After a day of dyeing, I step out to a gorgeous riot of color.  Now that’s a satisfying day’s work!

skeins-cooling

I’ve been dyeing up several new types of yarn, all of which will premier at next week’s trunk show.  They’ll hit the etsy shop soon after.  And patterns are in the final stages!  Look for them in the shop next Friday.
